About us
35 YEARS OF HELPING POOR FAMILIES
Hundreds of poor families in Eretz Yisroel depend on Yad L’Chesed.
They count on our weekly Shabbos packages to feed their children.
They count on our Chosson Fund to help marry off their children.
They count on our Kimcha D’Pischa packages to make Pesach.
Our Origins…
Yad L’Chesed was founded in Jerusalem over 35 years ago, by an eminent and distinguished personality – Rabbi Moshe Heller zt”l. He was a renowned talmid chochum, respected and revered by all who knew him. His expertise in various aspects of halocha was respected by the Rabbis of his time. Gedolei Yisroel, who were themselves learned and thoroughly familiar with the law, would turn to him at Sukkos time, for his opinion on the kashrus of their esrogim – a subject in which he had developed a particular expertise.
Through his involvement in community matters at that time, Rabbi Moshe Heller recognized an urgent and dire need – there were many large families in Jerusalem, who simply did not have the means to put food on the table. So he would distribute food every week, l’kovod Shabbos and yom tov. And thus, Yad L’Chesed was born.
After Rabbi Moshe Heller passed away, his children took upon themselves the holy work of caring for the needy as their father had done before them, with his son – Rabbi Benzion Heller – at the helm of the organization.
Today…
The organization has grown, as the number of its needy families increased. Its workers do their jobs quietly and without fanfare, protecting the dignity of the recipients. The food distribution list is currently between 600 – 700 large families. That’s a few thousand mouths to feed! Many more want to participate. More correctly put, they need to participate. But the organization can’t add families because of the shortage of funds. In the past we worked anonymously, raising money through private donations. Now, due to the sheer numbers of people we help, and the more we would want to help, we have been forced to “go public” with our appeal for financial assistance!
It’s important for you as a potential donor to know – our charity work is done entirely through volunteers, thus eliminating the burden of administrative costs, wages, and office rent. Publicity expenses are privately funded. This all means that when you give a donation, every penny goes toward food and the other charitable help for our recipients.
The current administrator, Rabbi Benzion Heller, frequently visits the gravesites of great tzadikim, to pray for the welfare of the volunteers and the donors who keep the organization on its feet.
